Yemen is moving to approve an executive plan to switch to using local grains instead of white flour, and in this regard, the Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment, Engineer Moeen Hashem Al-Mahakri, discussed an action plan aimed at encouraging citizens to use bakery products made from local grain flour.

During the meeting, which was held today, Tuesday 8/4/2025, at the Ministry of Economy building, the results of the experiments conducted by the Bakery Syndicate last month using whole wheat flour in several traditional Yemeni baked goods such as roti, bread, rushush and excellence bread were reviewed, in addition to the experiments of mixing wheat flour with local grains such as corn and millet carried out by major automated bakeries in the private sector.

Minister Al-Mahakri emphasized the importance of switching to local consumption of cereals from a health perspective, due to the harms associated with white flour, such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes, in addition to its economic importance in reducing the import bill, as well as supporting local farmers in the various Yemeni governorates.

The minister pointed out the importance of the media's role in raising awareness of the importance and benefits of using local grains and warning against the dangers of white flour, directing the Internal Trade and Consumer Protection Sector to complete experiments to determine the optimal mixing ratios and technical controls to produce high-quality baked goods.

The meeting approved the future work program with the participation of the Ministries of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Health, Environment and Information, in addition to the Yemeni Standards, Metrology and Quality Control Authority, Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Protection Association, Bakery Syndicate and Wheat Milling Companies, to raise consumer awareness about the health benefits of using whole grains.

The meeting stressed the need to expedite the completion of the executive plan in preparation for the launch of the program in the coming weeks, hold a workshop that includes all concerned parties, and prepare an accompanying media plan aimed at enhancing community awareness of the importance of the program.
